On the Subtitle Translation of Sherlock from the Perspective of Functional Equivalence Theory_

Abstract
Watching movies and television series has already become one of most popular form of entertainment. High quality of subtitle translation can not only increase the popularity of the works, but also promote the cultural communication. Based on the theory of functional equivalence, the thesis chooses subtitle translation of the famous work Sherlock as material and analyzes its translation in detail to find out how the subtitle translation reflect functional equivalence at lexical level and syntactic level. Under the guidance of functional equivalence theory, the thesis puts forward some suggestive translation methods including domestication, amplification and omission. It is hoped that this thesis can call for more attention to the theoretical guidance of Nida’s functional equivalence in subtitle translation.
