Abstract
Alice in Wonderland is a famous children’s literature written by Lewis Carroll, a 19th-century English writer and math teacher at the Christian College of Oxford University. It is one of the most significant absurd novels of the 19th century. Although this fairy tale embodies the ridiculous fantasy of imagination, the author deeply reflects the social reality of Britain in the mid-19th century, which makes readers see the seriousness from jokes and rationality in absurdity. As Alice experienced, people can feel the atmosphere of life and temperament in this era. Through the analysis and interpretation of the characters and scenes in Alice in Wonderland, this thesis deepens people’s cognition of the elements in Alice in Wonderland and makes people understand the works of Alice in Wonderland more profoundly. The embodied absurdity further reveals the relationship between Alice in Wonderland and the social reality, so to further explore the artistic characteristics of the novel and the deep theme and literary value.
