An Analysis of the Report on the Credit Crisis of Facebook in The Economist from the Perspective of Critical Discourse Analysis_

Abstract
Criticism is not only about the exposure and critique of things, but also about the nature of the problems by thinking dialectically to seek truths from facts. Due to the differences in politics, economy, ideology and cultures among countries, the media may cover global events from different perspectives and it would directly or indirectly affect readers’ attitudes. This thesis uses the discourse criticism to understand the media reporters’ judgement and evaluation, which is of certain significance to cultivating the ability to think independently and building true cognition. Based on the three-dimensional analytical framework of critical discourse proposed by Fairclough , the thesis particularly analyzes the Report on the Credit Crisis of Facebook in The Economist from three aspects--discourse, discourse practice and social practice and we realize the critical attitude of The Economist towards the crisis of data leakage caused by Facebook and its negative response, and its ideology implied in the discourse. This report has aroused attention of people to the privacy of their data, and provided some enlightenment for application and protection of users’ data in the social media industry in the future.
