An Analysis of Character Nickname Translation in All Men Are Brothers from the Perspective of Eco-translatology_英语论文

摘要

文学作品中的人物绰号,是每个人物所特有的,绰号相当于给人物贴上了一个更为特定的标签。与作品中的人物名字相比,人物绰号更为灵活多变,因此有更多的发挥空间,形式更加不拘一格,因此蕴含着更为丰富的内涵。作者可用更具特色的形式和语言赋予人物以绰号,从中体现人物个性、特点甚至揭示其命运,并且承载独特文化。《水浒传》是中国四大名著之一,研究价值极高,108位梁山好汉的人物绰号极具特色,给读者留下了深刻的印象。本文从生态翻译学角度出发,分析《水浒传》中的人物绰号英文翻译,对比评析赛珍珠和沙博理两版经典译本,探讨得失。

本文分析两版译本在“三维”——语言维、文化维和交际维的得失,从对比中得出优劣,以期为文学作品人物绰号提供参考和有益借鉴。本文将探讨译者在翻译人物绰号时,如何使译本实现“三维”适应性选择转换,使读者更好地理解和接受译本,实现“生存”。

Abstract

As a unique part in literary works, a nickname evidently puts a specific label on the character himself. Compared with the names, the nicknames of characters are more flexible and changeable so that they have more informal forms that contain abundant connotations. Author can give a character nickname using different forms and languages, which reflect characters’ personality, characteristics and even reveal their destiny, and convey unique culture. 

From the perspective of Eco-translatology, this paper analyses the English translation of character nicknames. The paper compares and evaluates Pearl Buck’s and Shapiro’s two translation versions of All Men Are Brothers from “three-dimensional”--linguistic dimension, cultural dimension and communicative dimension, and draws the advantages and disadvantages from the comparison, so as to provide reference and useful reference for the nicknames of characters in literary works. This paper also discusses how the translator realizes the “three-dimensional” adaptive selection transformation in the translation of nicknames, so that readers can better understand and accept the translation and achieve “survival”.
