On C-E Translation of Chinese Two-part Allegorical Sayings from the Perspective of Relevance Translation Theory_

Abstract
Chinese two-part allegorical saying is a special category of Chinese proverbs created by Chinese people and also a reflection of Chinese culture. It is widely used in both daily communication and literary works. Accurate translation of Chinese two-part allegorical sayings can help foreign readers better understand Chinese culture and enhance cultural exchanges. This paper holds that relevance translation theory can be applied to the translation of Chinese two-part allegorical sayings. According to Gutt (2004), translation can be seen as an act of communication instead of a text genre. Achieving optimal relevance is an important step in translation. Direct translation and indirect translation proposed by Gutt (2004) can be applied to the translation of two-part allegorical sayings. This paper aims to seek effective strategies for English translation of Chinese two-part allegorical sayings from the perspective of relevance translation theory. It is hoped that the strategies explored in this paper will add a new perspective for the study of the translation in this field and help English readers better understand the meaning of this special form of Chinese proverb.
