在日常生活中，我们需要和他人进行顺利且有效的对话，因此，这需要说话者和听话人共同遵循“合作原则”。但在有些特定的情况下，说话者会违反“合作原则”表达自己的言外之意，从而达到自己的特定目的。《老友记》作为美国的情景喜剧，剧中充斥着大量的对话，且内容有趣，生活细节真实，语言表达诙谐幽默，深得广大观众喜爱。它是史上最受欢迎的电视剧之一，至今仍在全球各地热播和重映。选择《老友记》作为本文的研究载体，分析其中因违反合作原则所带来的会话含义，具有广泛性与普遍性，读者更容易了解到合作原则在其对话中的体现，以及违反合作原则所产生的更深层次的语言含义与语言幽默，也可以促使英语学习者能够更好地理解违反“合作原则”所带来的会话含义，使他们在日常生活中，能够进行有效且顺利的交际对话。
