摘要 

《红楼梦》是一部具有世界影响力的小说，举世公认的中国古典小说巅峰之作，也是中国封建社会的百科全书，传统文化的集大成者。小说中人物的姓名各不相同，对于作者刻画书中的人物形象，解释小说人物姓名的含义和推动故事发展具有重要的作用。同时，该小说人物命名也体现了中国传统文化的魅力。这篇论文的研究是基于杨宪益译本和霍克斯译本这两个译本展开的。研究目的以翻译目的论为理论基础探索这两个译本中人名翻译的特点。本研究中首先将小说中人物名进行了分类，分成主要人物、仆人、戏子和神仙人物四类，然后基于目的论的三个原则对杨宪益和霍克斯的翻译方法和目的等进行了分析。通过研究发现，杨宪益和霍克斯个人文化背景不同，翻译目的也不同，因此在翻译人名的时候采用了不同的策略和方法，即便有时采用的策略相同，具体方法也不同。本研究的最终目的并不是要评价译本的优劣，而是希望能够帮助读者在阅读译本的时候更好地理解译者翻译的目的。
