The Contrastive Study on Lin Shu’s and Ezra Pound’s Translations: A Manipulation Theory

摘要

本文的研究对象是林纾和庞德的翻译对比。林纾和庞德不懂外文，却凭借自身的文学造诣翻译了许多著作，西方传统翻译研究以排除误译的规定性方法为主流，提倡“忠实”“对等”，以传统的翻译观审视林纾和庞德的译作，会发现“误译连连”。然而翻译不是简单的文字转化过程，二十世纪七十年代，西方翻译研究出现了“文化转向”，形成了以译入语文化为研究重点的流派，本文着重借鉴文化学派翻译观中Lefevere的操纵理论，以林纾和庞德的翻译对比为研究对象，将林纾和庞德放诸各自文化系统重新审视，指出“源语中心论”是导致林、庞翻译“不忠实”罪名成立的依据，认识到林、庞误译的历史必然性和合理性，并从中得到启示。建议国内译学研究与时俱进，由“源语中心论”转向“译语中心论”。

Abstract

This thesis mainly compares the translation works by Lin Shu and Pound. Knowing nothing about foreign language, they translated many works and caused great repercussions at that time. Traditional western translation considers avoiding mistranslation as the mainstream, and highly advocates “faithfulness” and “equivalence”. According to traditional translation studies, Lin Shu’s and Pound’s translation works are mistranslated. With the cultural turn in Western translation studies in the 1970s, many schools emphasized target-text specific. This thesis tries to employ the information manipulation theory to analyze Lin Shu’s and Pound’s translation and attempts to review their translation by putting them into their own culture system and focus on the following two points: a) Lin Shu’s and Ezra Pound’s translation motivations and strategies have been limited by respective source language cultures; b) In particular translation process, due to the poetics, ideology and patronage, Lin Shu and Ezra had no choice but made necessary deformations. This article focuses on Lin Shu’s and Ezra Pound's mistranslation and points out its inevitability and rationality. Finally, it argues that now it is time to change the traditional Chinese translation study mode and shift it from “source-text specific” to “target-text specific”.
