A Comparative-linguistic study of English and Chinese lexical Gaps

摘要

语言是文化的载体，但同时也是由文化所塑造出来。英语和汉语作为世界两大主要语言，起源于不同的文化。因此英汉语言之间不可避免会出现许多词汇空缺的现象。词汇空缺现象给两种文化背景的人们之间的沟通和理解带来许多了困难，可谓是翻译过程中最棘手的文化障碍。

本文主要包括词汇空缺的定义、类型、成因、可译性及其翻译策略五个方面，旨在介绍词汇空缺这一概念以及为英语学习者们提供一些词汇空缺的翻译策略。

Abstract

Language as the carrier of culture is shaped by culture. English and Chinese as the world's two major languages, originated from different cultures. Hence inevitably there are a lot of lexical gaps between English and Chinese. Lexical gaps cause difficulties for people from two kinds of culture background to communicate with and understand each other, which is the biggest obstacle to English learners and translators in China.

This paper mainly includes the definition, types, causes, translatability and translation strategies of lexical gaps, which aims to introduce the concept of lexical gap, and provide English learners with translation strategies of lexical gaps.
