郝真信英译《孔子家语》的传播有效性研究
On the Communication Effectiveness of Hutchinson’s Translation of the School Sayings of Confucius
摘 要:随着中外文化交流的深入,典籍英译受到越来越多中外学者的青睐。儒家思想作为曾经中国文化的主流思想,其对于当今中国文化的对外传播也产生了深刻的影响。《论语》,《孟子》,《大学》等儒家经典已经被英译并且在国内外广为流传。然而,《孔子家语》作为一本记录孔子和他的弟子之间故事的书,却很长一段时间被认为是“伪书”,饱受诸多争议直到20多年前才证明其内容的真实性。因此,几乎没有人完整英译过《孔子家语》。然而,郝真信英译的《孔子家语》的前十章在国内有不少研究。本论文主要借助使用与满足理论、说服论、一致论来对郝真信英译本进行传播性有效性研究,以此来分析郝真信英译本是否有效地将源信息传达给读者。

Abstract: With the deepening of Chinese and foreign cultural interaction, studies of English translation of Chinese classics have attracted more attention. As the mainstream thought of Chinese culture, Confucianism is crucial for the transmission of Chinese culture to the world. Many master works of Confucianism, such as The Analects, The book of Mencius, and The Great Learning, have been translated and widely spread at home and abroad, however, The School Sayings of Confucius, recording the stories between Confucius and his disciples, is regarded as ‘fake book’ and had been always disputed till it was proved to be authentic about two decades ago. Hence, the English translation of its full version can be hardly available. However, the first 10 chapters translated by Hutchinson have been much studied in Chinese. The present thesis analyzes the communication effectiveness of Hutchinson’s translation under the guidance of communication theories: the uses and gratification theory, persuasion theory and consistency theory, to evaluate whether the Hutchinson’s translation effectively communicate the original message to readers in English.
