Study on the Characteristics and Translation Strategies of English Proverbs

摘要

英语谚语是英语国家民间文学的一种，是几千年英美文化的沉淀，是群众经验的提炼。它通俗简练、生动活泼，反映了人民的生活和思想，具有广泛的通俗性、生动的口语化等特点。对英语谚语的翻译对于我们正确理解谚语本身的含义及其折射出的民族文化有举足轻重的作用。奈达的功能对等理论是英语谚语翻译的理论基础，在进行翻译时，读者的反应是评价翻译好坏的标准。基于此，在翻译英语谚语时我们必须考虑其语言特征和文化背景，灵活地运用直译法、意译法、直译兼意译法等方法，力求准确表达原文的意义，全面正确理解谚语的深刻内涵。本文对英语谚语的特点进行了探讨，并对其翻译方法进行研究和分析。

Abstract

English proverb is a kind of English national folk literature with thousands of years of cultural precipitation, extraction of masses experience. It is easy to understand, lively and vivid , reflecting the people's life and thought. It plays a decisive role on the translation of English proverbs for us to correctly understand the meaning of proverbs and the national culture. As the theoretical basis of English proverbs translation, Nida’s functional equivalence theory points out that the reader’s response is the standard of evaluation in the translation of English proverbs. Therefore, in the translation of English proverbs we must consider the language features and cultural background, flexibility in the use of literal translation and free translation to express the meaning of original accurately and fully understand the profound meaning of proverbs. The thesis discusses the characteristics and the translation methods of English proverbs.
