An Analysis of “the American Dream” in the Great Gatsby

摘要

1925年，菲茨杰拉德所作的《了不起的盖茨比》是一部以20世纪20年代的纽约市及长岛为背景的短篇小说，此书成为了当时美国最负盛名的著作之一。作者通过对情节与人物的描述巧妙地揭示了爵士时代所存在的重重矛盾。本文首先介绍了美国梦的基本情况，即历史起源和它的发展，旨在找出美国梦在20世纪初堕落的原因。同时研究了20世纪20年代社会背景下的美国梦，向人们展示出当时状况下美国梦的浮华与虚幻。通过对美国梦的起源与发展的解读，以及对书中不同人物所展现出的美国梦的分析，使人们对此书有更深刻的认识及见解，并且帮助人们树立正确的人生价值观。

Abstract

In 1920s, Fitzgerald finishes his most famous novel The Great Gatsby, which is hailed as one of the foremost pieces of American fiction of its time. The author brilliantly and succinctly explores the tensions and contradictions of the period. This paper aims to study “the American Dream” according to the social background in 1920s and show people the vanity and illusion in “the American Dream”. The general introduction to the origin and the transformation of “the American Dream” set a comprehensive foundation. Moreover, this paper will attempt to explore how the main roles of this book represent “the American Dream” with its specific characteristics. After the analysis on different characters’ American dreams, the paper arrives at the enlightens which derived from the illusion of “the American Dream”.
