跨文化视角下“孝”的英译研究

Cross-cultural Implications for Translating Xiao from Chinese into English

摘  要：“孝”属于具有中国特色的哲学范畴。它的文化意义丰富，也是中国文化中多种美德之本。随着“东学西渐”的发展，中国文化也受到了越来越多的关注。但是，把“孝”译成英语却困难重重，这也导致很难把中国孝文化传播到西方。本文试图找出难以正确英译“孝”的原因。本文运用巴斯奈特和勒菲弗尔的理论，从跨文化视角对《论语》的三个英译本进行了对比分析。从而得出结论，译者个人经历和翻译目的以及其所采用的翻译策略是造成“孝”有不同英译的原因。英译“孝”时，译者应该把读者接受能力和文化差异同时加以考虑。

Abstract: Xiao belongs to a philosophical category with Chinese characteristics. Embodied with different cultural meanings, it is also the foundation of many virtues in Chinese culture. With the Eastern culture spreading to the Western countries, Chinese culture is attracting more and more attention from the world. However, there are difficulties in translating xiao into English, which makes it become challenging work to introduce its concept to the Western world. This thesis attempts to find out the obstacles hindering the precise English translation of xiao. Under the guidance of Bassnett and Levefere’s theories, the thesis carries out a comparative study of the three English versions of Lunyu from the perspective of cross-cultural communication. It is found that different translations of xiao are contributed to the translators’ personal experiences and purposes as well as translation strategies. Translators should take both the readers’ acceptability and the cultural differences into consideration in translating the concept of xiao from Chinese into English.
