The Registers of the Argot and Jargon in English:A case study of Film Godfather

摘要

隐语行话作为一种秘密语言的形式，应用于某些特定的社会情景，蕴含了其特有的文化内涵。如今，隐语行话仍然活跃存在，并且经常出现在电影、电视、文学作品之中，活跃于人们的生活之中。一些学者就这一特殊语言现象的文化内涵进行了研究，而对语言本身的研究甚少。韩礼德语域理论认为，语域是一种人们选择并适用于某情景的语言类型。其中，由三种社会变量决定一个语域，他们是：语场，语旨，语式。语域是每一种语言都具备的，通过语域研究可以对某种特定语言进行更加深刻的理解。世界著名的经典电影《教父》中有比较丰富的隐语行话相关语料，本文以电影《教父》为案例，依照韩礼德的语域理论，运用文献研究法和逻辑分析法，根据该电影中的相关语料探讨英语隐语行话的语域三要素。通过对电影《教父》中隐语行话语料语域三要素的分析，旨在阐明隐语行话的构成机制和特点以及在特殊社会背景下如何运用和发展。

Abstract

As a form of secret language which is used in a particular social situation, argot and jargon contains the certain culture connotation. Nowadays, argot and jargon still exist and frequently appear in people’s daily life especially in films, televisions and literary works. Some scholars have do research about the culture of this kind of language, but pay less attention on the language itself. Halliday’s register theory considers that register is a type of language which is selected as appropriate to some type of situation. There are three social variables that determine the register: field of discourse, tenor of discourse, and mode of discourse. Register is a common property of a kind of language, a better understanding about some special language will be get from the research of register. In the world-famous film Godfather, there is abound of language data about argot and jargon. This paper takes the Godfather as a case, in accordance with Halliday’s register theory, proposed with literature research method and logical analysis, intends to explore the registers of argot and jargon in English and discuss the field, tenor and mode of the language data in the film Godfather. With the analysis of registers of argot and jargon in film Godfather, this essay aims to demonstrate the formation mechanism and features of this kind of special language and how argot and jargon are used and develop.
