Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to study the choice of translation strategy, especially the dialectical unity of foreignization and domestication on the basis of maximal foreignization and minimal domestication in literary translation. Of this dialectical relationship, this thesis was prompted by the many researchers focusing on domestication with little attention to foreignization in translating foreign literature. Data were collected from Sense and Sensibility and its Chinese translated versions by Sun Zhili and Wu Conghan, and a series of cases were compared and analyzed. The finding indicates that foreignization precedes domestication in Sun’s version and domestication is prior to foreignization in Wu’s version. This research supports Sun Zhili’s foreignization translation, not only in translation of style and cultural elements, but also in meanings and sentiments of the original. The thesis concludes that optimal combination of maximal foreignization and minimal domestication is not only feasible but also practical in literary translation.

摘  要

本篇论文的目的是探讨关于翻译策略的选择，尤其研究文学翻译过程中归化与异化的辩证统一方法的运用。基于这种辩证关系，在文学翻译的实践中，大多数研究者聚焦于归化而忽视了异化。资料的收集来源主要出自简•奥斯丁原著《理智与情感》以及孙致礼与武崇汉的两个中译本，通过对比与分析的研究方法，对两个译本中一系列翻译案例进行探讨。本文通过比较研究得出结论，孙版本异化多于归化，而武版本归化重于异化。本论文以孙致礼的异化翻译策略为基准，从文化因素，风格，意义以及情感的翻译这四个角度进行论述。分析表明，最佳的翻译组合方法是基于最大异化与最小归化的有机统一。这种方法，对指导文学翻译实践与教学具有积极的导向作用。

1 Introduction
Translation is the outreach of linguistic level to cultural gradation. With so many scholars and publications burrowing in translation both at home and abroad, domestication and foreignization have been arousing intense discussions since their emergence. Translation on the basis of cultural perspective becomes top priority nowadays, especially in literary translation. The tendency of  globalization and, frequency of cross-communication appeal for diversity and equality of cultural campaign, pioneer a new path for rational translation, which consists of rendering of meanings, conveyance of sentiments, retainment of style, precise translation of peculiar cultural elements and so on.
