Abstract
Shakespeare’s superb use of language makes his immortal works of art. Shakespeare deserves the title master the language. Shakespeare’s skillful use of English erected a milestone, the transition from medieval English to modern English of Elizabethan period. His works show a unique creativity of language. In his works, rich vocabulary, vivid metaphor, and witty puns influence modern English significantly.
Referring to Shakespeare, people will think of his puns, and his title, a master of the pun in the world. Shakespeare’s puns are joking, laughing, allegorical, and exposed, people left a deep impression on the characters. Therefore, pun is a special element in Shakespeare’s works, the translation of which can not be ignored. In fact, for the translation of Shakespeare’s puns, many scholars still try to make a lot of efforts. In short, as long as translators grasp the direct and indirect meanings of a pun, and the thorough understanding of its relationship with the context, their translations can reflect the effect of pun, aiming at most closely to the original.
Shakespeare’s puns, far beyond the words which just make people laugh, are an important integral part of his works, also a unique rhetoric device and drama. Therefore, the successful translation of puns faithfully reflects the integrity of Shakespeare’s art style and the same dramatic effect of the original has significant implications. Pun frequently appearing in plays is style of art deliberately pursued as a language art by authors, not only realizing a conventional sense, but also reflecting particular social concerns of thinking and life. In this paper, I want to introduce some translations of Shakespeare’s puns by literal translation and free translation, the two different methods of translating, then analyze the application of puns in Shakespeare’s works.
