Abstract:
A film is a popular art with both artistic and commercial values. More and more English films are introduced into China to promote the communication between China and western countries. The translation is a challenging job. As for the same original film title, the mainland version, Hong Kong version and Taiwan version coexist, causing confusion to the audience and bringing barrier to communication across the Straits. Proceeding from the features and functions of the film title, this paper analyzes the main translation methods and strategies applied in English film title translation. This paper intends to argue that English film title translation should be under the basic principle of fulfilling the specific functions of the film title through adopting translation methods properly. As regard to the disunity in translated versions, this paper discusses and compares the different translation methods applied and the different features of the versions in the three regions respectively, and holds that the differences in socio-cultural context are the main reason for the disunity.

1. Introduction
A film is one of the most influential mass media. As an audiovisual art, it follows and reflects people’s life. It is a product of particular culture. Although film was born in the west, it is gaining ever-growing popularity and has now become a global art. Over the past decades of reform and opening up to the outside world, with China’s more frequent cultural, economic and political exchange with foreign countries, foreign films and TV plays, particularly films in English language, have entered China’s market and held a very important position in Chinese people’s recreational life. As Lin Qiuyun said, “Film is a form of art, and a form of mass culture likewise, so it should accord with the public tastes as well as the appreciation of the beauty.”
