Abstract:

More and more bilingual public signs have appeared in public places. Not only can these public signs reflect the spirit of a city, they can also embody the whole quality standards of a county. Proceeding from concepts, classifications, and functions of public signs, so as to make people know better about the public sign, then this thesis analyzes the current translational situation and the translational shortages of some public signs. At last, in light of the basic translation theory, this thesis explores some effective ways of translational techniques of public signs, such as, omission, addition, borrowing, liberal translation and conversion.

公共场所的双语公示语越来越多,公示语不仅能反映出一个城市的精神面貌，还能体现出一个国家整体的素质水平。本文首先对公示语的概念，分类，以及功能等进行介绍。然后，对目前我国公示语翻译的现状做出了分析。最后以基本的翻译理论为基础，探索出了最有效的汉语公示语的英译技巧。比如：省译，增译，借译，意译，倒译等多种修辞手法，并铺以大量事实。

1. Introduction
Since China has implemented the policy of reform and opening-up，many Chinese people begin their journey to other countries, meanwhile, many foreigners come to China. After the 2008 Olympic Games of Beijing, the 2010 World Expos of Shanghai, and the 2010 Asian Games of Guangzhou, all these international activities make China become a spotlight of the world and attract more and more foreigners swarm into China. Most of those arrivers speak English rather than Chinese, so in order to make the foreigners live comfortable in China, Chinese government and some experts begin to pay more attention to the C-E translation of public signs.
The C-E translation of public signs plays a very important role in cross-cultural communication, because it not only brings much convenience to foreigners in traveling, shopping, eating and so on, but also serves as an international window for foreigners to know more about China. Furthermore, a good language environment will leave foreigners a good image.
