Abstract
Ode to the West Wind is not only a very important work in England literary history, but also has its enormous value on translation. In this thesis, functional equivalence theory acts as a guide to analyze and evaluate Jiang Feng’s and Zha Liangzheng’s versions of the Ode to the West Wind. By analyzing different examples in the two versions, the thesis aims to evoke a close equivalence of response between the source receptors and target receptors so as to show the application and positive attitude on Functional Equivalence Theory. The author attempts to provide a new angle in appreciating and evaluating the two different versions of literature works in order to figure out the most effective approach to achieve “the closest natural equivalence”.

Chapter One Introduction
Shelly’s poems have always been translated and re-translated for many years. Ode to the West Wind is the most famous poem among his works. The poem was translated by Guo Moruo in 1923 for the first time. Until today, there have been over sixty versions of translation. Meanwhile, many Chinese scholars have focused on the factors that influence the translation by comparative studies of different versions. Chen Yan(2008) analyzes the poem in a different way. She thinks that the poem is welcomed by Chinese people because of its correspondence in Chinese’s history of at that time. Xin Zhonghua(1999) hopes to explore the themes of the poem from the aspect of praising life and taking Shelly’s life into consideration, showing the life consciousness of Shelly. Life is powerful and valuable, and the meaning of life is probed into one by one in the article. Feng Minxian(2007) analyzes the romanticism in the poem by studying the features of romanticism and indicating the fascinating romantic beauty and glamour of the poem. He studies this poem in two different sides: beautiful natural scenery descriptions and associations of poet’s mood of nature and personal desire. He believes that the west wind is described to be a symbol as faculty of poem that drives the dead thought from old system.
