Abstract
In the long course of the development of human history, animals usually keep a close relation with human beings and influence human existence and development deeply. The close relation results in human complex feelings of fondness, sympathy antipathy, or fear. Also, people often use animals to express their feelings. Therefore, English and Chinese animals words make up a great part of their own respective system of language. In this thesis, I will try to explain the cultural connotation difference between English and Chinese with the comparison analysis method, and give some example about the different cultural connotation. The writer classifies the animal words into four kinds according to the cultural connotation. They are “Identical Animal Words with Similar Cultural Connotations”, “Identical Animal Words with Different Cultural Connotation”, “Different Animal Words with Similar Cultural Connotations”, “Unique Chinese and English Animal Words”. Some translation methods of animal words also will be given at the end of the thesis. The animal words should be translated according to the connotation.

I. Introduction
Language and culture are closely related and the former is indispensable to the latter. A language is said to be the carrier of its culture. Their close relationship can well be illustrated by cross-linguistic comparison of animal words in respect to culture connotation.
Animals are friends of human beings. Languages of all nations contain a lot of words denoting animals, and so do Chinese and English. Animals have long been part of human life and many animals have become symbols in people’s mind. This symbolism is reflected in the language. All languages contain a lot of expressions denoting animals. With the development of the society, people associate their feelings and emotions, even happenings and natural phenomena with various animals, which are thought to represent different characters like people, or serve as omens.
