Abstract:

Cultural exchange and transmission is now the theme in current academia, and thus translation of literature works plays increasingly important role in promoting communication among countries. Under this environment, Chinese writer Mo Yan won Nobel Prize in 2012 and gained great reputation both in China and overseas, which has sparked lasting discussion and debates in domestic. And the English versions of Mo Yan’s novels are translated overseas by Howard Goldblatt. One of which has made a great success--- Red Sorghum Family, which has placed a solid foundation for western readers’ acceptance of Mo’s works. This thesis focuses on Red Sorghum Family as a case to study Howard Goldblatt’s English version. With the aim of probing into the fidelity and creation of the translation and the translation strategy. It’s expected that this thesis will enable more people to realize the importance of the fidelity and creation, and provide some help for the translation hereafter, thus introduce more Chinese literature works into the the rest of the world.

摘要：

文化的交流与传播已成为当今学术界的主流，各国之间文化交流日益频繁，因此文学作品的翻译在促进文化交流与传播中的地位越来越重要。2012年，中国作家莫言获得诺贝尔文学奖，并闻名于国内外，于是国内掀起了一股研究莫言小说以及其葛浩文英译本的潮流。其中葛浩文翻译的《红高粱家族》作为成功的典型范例，为西方读者对莫言小说的认可奠定了坚实的基础。本文以《红高粱家族》为例，从文化与语言的角度出发，通过举例并分析的方法简析葛浩文英译本，以此探讨葛浩文英译本在语言文化上的忠实与创作，并研究葛浩文的翻译策略, 最后得出结论：《红高粱家族》英译本是忠实与创作相互碰撞妥协而产生的，有价值的文学作品需要好的翻译，同时也离不开再创造。作者希望本文能通过简析忠实原文与二度创作的重要性，并为后来译者提供些许帮助，希望本研究能让更多人看到文学翻译创造与忠实的重要意义，从而将越来越多的中国文学作品介绍给世界。

Introduction
Red Sorghum Family, one of the greatest works written by Mo Yan, by the effort of Howard Goldblatt, Red Sorghum Family was translated into English and played a very crucial role in advocating Chinese culture and promoting international communication. Proved by facts, the English version of Red Sorghum Family has achieved a great success in English speaking countries. This thesis is undertaken to study Howard Goldblatt’s translation strategies used in Red Sorghum Family. The thesis falls into five parts, the first part is the introduction of the background and the significance of the paper. The second part introduces the research value of Goldblatt’s translation. The third part is going to analyze the translation strategies used by Howard Goldblatt in translating Red Sorghum Family. The forth part studies shortages of the translation in Red Sorghum Family. The last part is the conclusion, which indicates the limitations of the thesis and proposes some questions for further research.
