Abstract:
Drama has both literariness and theatricality which makes drama translation a special field. As the main function of drama is to be performed on stage, it contains specific principles and strategies in translation. This paper analyzes two Chinese versions of Pygmalion translated by Lin Yutang and Yang Xianyi and sums up examples to summarize the translation principles and strategies used in these two versions. The paper elaborates how characteristic of stage influences different translators’ choices of translation principles and strategies. The paper also discusses the differences and performing effects that these choices cause in the language and style of translated texts. Hopefully, this paper will provide theoretical foundation and guiding principle of drama translation.
