Abstract
Interjections as the functional words are commonly used in daily communication in China and the western countries. By using the interjections, people can express their mind, emotions and the communicative intention. There are two classifications of interjections. One is onomatopoeia and the other is the words from other categories, such as adjectives and nouns. The flexible usage and special grammatical feature of interjections have aroused many scholars and translators to study them. And the previous study mainly focused on the pragmatic strategies and functions of interjections. However, this thesis aims to analyze the comprehension and translation of interjections in western films based on Relevance Theory put forward by Sperper and Wilson. These two scholars suggested that human verbal communication is a process of inference in nature, with context as its basis and relevance as its principle. In this thesis, based on some specific context and according to the Ostension and Inference,Optimal Relevance and Economy Principle in Relevance Theory, the author will take some specific examples to analyze the comprehension and translation of English interjections. The result of this thesis has shown that because the degree of optimal relevance is determined by contextual effect and cognitive effort, translators can use transliteration or omission to translate interjections when these words have a low semantic value in order to make the audience pay minimum cognitive effort. But for those interjections with some special communicative intentions, translators can choose free translation to deal with them. In this way, audience can understand the interjections better and translators can improve their translating proficiency.
