Abstract
In the objective world, everything has its own unique color. English and Chinese are abundant in color terms, with similarities as well as different connotations. Due to cultural discrepancies, color terms in different languages often result in misunderstandings in intercultural communications of English learners, which is particularly obvious in English-Chinese and Chinese-English translation. Based on the theory of Cognitive Linguistics, this thesis analyses the unequivalence of basic color terms in English and Chinese, and discusses the causes of the differences and, with the Translation Theory of foreignizing and domesticating, the translation methods for English learners. As most of the researches about color terms mainly describe semantic differences or cultural differences rather than combining the cognitive differences and translation theory, this thesis carves out a new way on the study of translation of color terms, which will greatly contribute to English teaching and learning.

The world is filled with varieties of colors, which are an important component part of vocabulary of almost all the human languages. But for English learners, it’s usually a difficult thing to translate color terms correctly. Though there are many comparative studies about color terms in English and Chinese, few of them combine their cognitive differences with translation methods. On account of the above facts, this paper analyses the unequivalence of basic color terms in English and Chinese, discusses the causes of their differences with cognitive linguistics, and then presents the translation methods for English learners.
