In recent years, with the increase of the international communication and the popularity of the English language teaching, an increasing number of Chinese can talk to foreigners in their fluent English face to face. However, things will become difficult and embarrassed once foreigners use the idioms, religious idioms in particular.
The thesis attempts to explore how the Christianity influence the English idioms by introducing idioms related to religious customs and church services as well as our daily life. We hope that Chinese can communicate with Westerners more efficiently and lessen our misunderstanding on the basis of knowing the knowledge of western culture especially the Christian culture.

Chapter 1 Introduction
1.1 A Brief History of Christianity
In 43 BC, the Roman emperor Claudius conquered the England. Followed the invasion was the transmission of the higher civilization----Christianity. During Roman occupation (55BC-410AD), it was spread all over the England. Although the German’ s invasion made it put a temporary stop to it, St Augustine sent by Gregorian succeeded in continuing its development. Henry 8th’s religious reform (1534) made it more flexible to the Great Britain. [1] In order to strengthen his own power and get rid of the pope, Henry 8th carried out his religious reform by adopting a series of measures. For instance, the Act of Supremacy (1534) made his reform possible to sever the relations between the Church of England and western church of both administratively and economically. Besides, he became the leader of the Church of England and made it his ruling instrument. Today, even the national anthem of the UK is God Save the Queen.
The extensive spread of Christianity in the Britain is under the reign of the pope Gregorian (510-604) [1]. As soon as Gregorian became pope in 510AD, he sent St Augustine to England. Since then Christianity has taken its root in Britain. In its development process, it formed their Christian culture in different times and regions.
