ABSTRACT
   
Communication takes place anywhere and anytime and it is common sense that both parties involved in the talk exchange ought to obey certain rules. But the Cooperative Principle proposed by Paul Grice argues that the violation of the maxims in it will create great humorous atmosphere. Based on this circumstance, this paper intends to dig into American talk shows, to find out their advantages over Chinese TV programs, and to enhance cross-cultural communication. It proceeds from the definition and origin of the word “humor”, elaborates on the relationship between humor and the Cooperative Principle, and further explores the four sub-maxims and criteria. After that, specific cases and examples in forms of jokes, short stories and interviews from The Daily Show with Jon Stewart are analyzed. This paper finds out that among the violation of those maxims, the Relation Maxim and Quality Maxim are flouted on most of the occasions to create humor. Hosts may adopt the technique of responding irrelevantly for the burst of laughter. Another method favored by them to express humor is stating fake facts easy to be punctured. After studying their relationship, readers can learn how to create relaxed and pleasant atmosphere with linguistic techniques and Chinese TV program directors and host can learn how to produce a successful show with excellent public reputation.

人们的交谈无时无刻都在发生，并且谈话双方有特定的必须遵守的规矩。格莱斯提出合作原则的概念，并认为违反合作原则能意外地产生幽默效果。本文以此为切入点，深入研究美国脱口秀及其与用策略，了解它相对于中国节目的优势，旨在帮助观众理解西方文化，提高谈话技巧并提高英语学习的兴趣。本文以简要介绍美国各类脱口秀为起点，引出幽默一词的起源，详述了幽默的产生和合作原则之间的关系，继而从微观角度具体探究了四条准则，分析《每日秀》中生动的幽默例子并配以独到的解释。通过大量详实细致的实例分析，我们得出在美国脱口秀中主持人大多会采用违反关系原则和质量原则来达到幽默效果，主持人经常急转话锋，使上下文不关联，或运用容易被识破的假话来制造幽默效果。通过本文的研究，希望人们在沟通交流时能巧妙得运用合作原则的违反，创造出轻松幽默的氛围，提高英语学习的兴趣，也希望国内脱口秀节目能学习美式脱口秀的长处。
