Abstract
With the advent of information age, Internet has become an integral part of everyday life followed by the popularity of Internet buzzwords. Internet buzzwords refer to a kind of linguistic phenomenon that is based on the computer and prospers with the Internet. They are spreading beyond the Internet and become buzzwords of the whole society, exerting their influence on everyone in the information age of the 21st century. Keeping up with the time, Internet buzzwords are characterized by conciseness, vividness, innovation, individuation and non-convention. All of those features are most remarkably reflected in the principle of economy in linguistics. The Least of Effort put forward by K.Zipf and the Principle of Economy by A.Martinet are the most classical ones in this field.
Based on the Least of Effort put forward by K.Zipf and the Principle of Economy by A.Martinet, this paper, focusing on some representative Internet buzzwords of recent years, will conduct a comparative analysis of English and Chinese Internet buzzwords from the perspective of lexicology and semantics to lay bare the different reflections of the economy between the two languages and preliminarily explore the trend of Internet buzzwords. It is divided into three parts. The first part analyses the definition and features of Internet buzzwords and the second part deals with the principle of economy. The last part conducts a comparison of the economy between English and Chinese Internet buzzwords.
The materials applied in this paper are collected from the social networks and online news portals in order to objectively display the features of Internet buzzwords, thus giving readers a sense of reality and familiarity. Through the comparative analysis, we can arrive at the conclusion that different languages have different reflections of economy and the existent language is the most economical one for its users.
