Abstract

Rhetorical devices always play important and irreplaceable roles in public speeches, which make those speeches vivid, effective and appealing. This paper begins with a brief introduction to the rhetorical devices which are mostly used in English public speeches, then makes an analysis of the classification of those rhetorical devices with various examples, and thereby further demonstrates the theme of this paper – the importance of those rhetorical devices used in such speeches by displaying the strengthened effect and intensive impulse.

摘 要

修辞一直在各种公共演讲中发挥着重要且不可替代的作用，它们使得演讲生动，效果明显，并且具有号召力。这篇论文对英文公共演讲中最常使用的修辞手法做了简单介绍，用大量实例具体分析了不同类别的修辞在这些演讲中的分类使用，从而进一步证明了该篇的主题，修辞能让公共演讲更加有效，更有号召感。

1. Introduction
With a long history since ancient time, public speech is known to all that it is an important activity around every corner of the world. In order to strengthen the influence of those speeches, there is no denying that rhetorical devices are essential to various kinds of public speeches, making those speeches more vivid and powerful, deepening audiences’ understanding, and rendering the atmosphere. According to the theory of Hamilton C. who supplies those rhetorical devices which are mostly used in designing the speech styles of English public speeches and the theory of professor Fan Jiacai who comes up with the rough category of English rhetorical devices, this essay mainly analyzes the usages of a variety of rhetorical devices which are mostly used in English public speeches. And the analysis comes from lexical, syntactic and phonetic levels on the basis of concrete examples.
