Abstract
Sexism, which is a serious and omnipresent problem, affects the development of language and can be clearly found out in language. As an inseparable and important part of language, the addressing system also manifests the fact that women are second-citizens subordinated to men and the society has a biased opinion towards them.
This paper mainly concentrates on the major manifestations of sexism form three aspects: name, common appellation and job title. Then the causes of sexism in address terms would be discussed, which include the effects of religion,social condition,traditional values. The next section of the paper sheds light on the new changes in addressing system after feminist movement owing to the awakening of women, their improved social conditions as well as their pursuit of equity. Although the sexism phenomenon is bettered, these improvements are not widely accepted and put into practice. To completely eliminate sexism in addressing system, the most basic efforts should be focused on improving the social status and protecting the legal rights of women.

性别歧视作为一种普遍且长期存在的社会现象影响了语言的发展,在英语许多方面都留下了深刻的印记。称谓语体系作为语言体系不可分割的重要部分同样体现着女性的从属地位和社会对女性的不公与偏见。本文探讨英语称谓语中性别歧视现象在姓名、职业称谓和通用称谓中的具体表现,并从英语语言的宗教影响,女性的社会地位和社会价值观等方面探讨这一现象出现的根源。同时,本文具体探讨了英语称谓语中的一些新变化,认为英语称谓语中的性别歧视现象得到一定的改善,但是实际使用中人们对这些新变化的接受程度并不高,因此这些新变化尚未成为主流思想。要改善甚至消除英语称谓语中的性别歧视现象,最根本的还需提高女性的权利和社会地位。
