Abstract

Literary adaptation on film and TV is becoming more common. For example, there are over 200 film versions of Sherlock Holmes, from a silent film made in 1916 by William Gillette to the reimagined 2010 masterpiece version starring Benedict Cumberbatch. The good and the bad were intermingled. There’s been a debate over the years as to the fidelity to the original. Sherlock as the new BBC version which is an updated one with the modern context achieved success and aroused widespread concern in society since it was published. Same characters and plots are still proper even in the background of the modern London, which is the success of the adaptation. In the article, the characters and plots from the original in the adaptation will be analyzed from the perspective of faithfulness theory.

This thesis consists of three parts. Part one introduces faithfulness theory on adaptation. Part two turns to analyze the characters and plots in the adaptation with faithfulness theory. The last part is the conclusion. On the basis of the previous parts, it can be concluded based on faithfulness theory that the combination of the faithfulness to the original and the innovation of the adaptation is the success of the Sherlock adaptation.

摘        要

名著的电视剧改编历来屡见不鲜，从1916年迄今，福尔摩斯的相关影视剧作改编多达200多部，作品良莠不齐。而关于其改编是否忠于原著这一点一直争论不休，没有哪一部成功的改编剧是完全照搬原著的，因为改编不可避免的要有所删减。而电视剧《神探夏洛克》一经问世便取得巨大成功。该剧虽把18世纪的福尔摩斯置于21世纪的伦敦之中，却毫无违和之感。这恰好是这部现代福尔摩斯的亮点之所在，所以本论文从忠于原著理论的角度对该剧的成功之处进行分析。这一论点主要通过小说人物性格和情节设计分别进行研究。
本文包含三个部分。第一部分介绍改编理论中的忠于原著论。第二部分以人物性格和情节设计这两个方面为主要分类，遵循忠于原著理论，对该剧进行分析。最后一部分为结论，在全文研究基础上，我们可以发现此改编方式在结合遵循原著与创新方面对该剧的成功产生的重要作用。
