摘 要
《了不起的盖茨比》和《夜色温柔》都是菲茨杰拉德的作品。本文对作者及两部作品的写作内容进行了简单的介绍及对比。通过对社会原因及个人原因的研究,分析导致两位主人公悲惨命运的因素,并进行对比。其中社会原因可分为社会背景和阶级差异两方面,而个人原因则从主人公的梦想和个性差异两个方面进行描述。在文章的结尾对导致主人公悲惨命运的因素做总结思考。本文旨在通过对不同原因导致《夜色温柔》和《了不起的盖茨比》的主人公无法逃脱的命运的对比研究,加深人们对当时美国人的特征的理解,让人们对因过于执着而导致悲惨命运的含义进行解读,从而引发对自己命运的深思。

Abstract
The Great Gatsby and Tender Is the Night are all written by Scott Fitzgerald. This paper gives a brief introduction of the writer and the main contents of the two novels. Through the study of the social and personal reasons which lead to the two heroes’ sad fates, this paper makes a comparison of the factors which lead to the two heroes’ sad fates. Social reasons can be divided into social background and social differences. Personal reasons are described from two factors including heroes’ ideals and heroes’ characters. At the end, the paper has a conclusion of the elements which result in the two heroes’ bad fate. Through the study and comparison of the reasons which lead to Gatsby’s and Dick’s miserable fates, this paper intends to deepen the readers’ understanding of the characteristics of Americans in Jazz Age and enable the readers have a good interpretation of the tragic destiny which result from over-persistent. By enjoying this paper, readers may have a deep thinking of their own destinies.

1 Introduction
As for the question that what instructive thing one should do and what kind of person one should be in the limited life, different people may have different views. Probably, just because of various attitudes, divergent fortunes and all kinds of characters have been created. The Great Gatsby and Tender Is the Night are the two most influential novels of Scott Fitzgerald’s. In order to reflect the author’s fear of the era in which he lived, Fitzgerald indicates the devastating effect which money society with moral decay has brought to the glorious ideals and human goodness through the description of the sad fates of the two heroes.
