Abstract:
The famous work, the Old Man and the Sea, portrayed one classical hero figure, Santiago. In the novel, the old fisherman caught a great Marlin and fought off the sharks to protect his catch. In the struggle, he showed us his character different from the others, and just with these qualities, he could go through all the troubles and was regarded as one hero figure Hemingway had described. In this paper, I introduce his character which can not be defeated first: the self-dependence and confidence, determination, perseverance, fearlessness and bravery, and the courage of challenging the limits. Then I analyze the influence of Santiago’s character on us college students at present age — having good attitudes to face troubles. And hense though the analysis of the character, we could have a deeper understanding about the hero figure, Santiago.
Key words: Santiago, character, spirit, attitude

Most likely because of this work, his name is still familiar to almost the whole world.

Hemingway, a famous American novelist, was born in rural family doctors. When he was young, he liked fishing, hunting, music and painting. As a Red Cross convoy driver, Hemingway had attended the First World War and then worked as a reporter in Europe. Later, he participated in the Spanish civil war and the Second World War. At his aged time, he suffered from a variety of illnesses. After numerous invalid treatments, he finally committed suicide with a gun.
