1. Introduction
1.1 The Introduction to the Author and His Works
F. Scott Fitzgerald was born and brought up in St. Paul, Minnesota. He came from an unsuccessful upper class family, and was educated at Princeton University. In 1917 he left Princeton without graduation and joined the Army. He became an army lieutenant and in a training camp in Alabama he met the rich and beautiful Zelda Sayre and fell in love with her. Zelda declined to marry him because he was not rich enough. In despair, he worked hard at the novel he had started at Princeton. This was his first novel, and when it came out in 1920, entitled This Side of the Paradise, it was an instant success. Fitzgerald became a literary sensation, earning enough money and fame to convince Zelda marry him. Overnight he found himself rich and famous at the age of 24, and he and Zelda were married. His second novel, The Beautiful and the Damned, came out in 1922. These novels, together with his two collections of short stories, Flappers and Philosophers and Tales of the Jazz Age, gave a vivid and truthful portrayal of the glamorous, extravagant, pleasure-seeking life-style of the 1920's, which was nicknamed "The Roaring Twenties" and "The Jazz Age".
