Abstract
Feminist literature, as a distinct school of literature with more than one-hundred-year history, aims to give close attention to women’s social status and living condition, embark on an examination of the intricate relationship between men and women, and arouse long-depressed female subjectivity and self-consciousness. Among the feminist writers from western countries and China, Virginia Woolf and Eileen Chang are distinguished by creating different types of women characters, depicting their destiny and experience, and expressing distinguished feminist themes. These two feminist writers’ works have stimulated the development of feminist literature.
This thesis elaborates Woolf’s and Chang’s feminist themes according to their main works. First, it introduces the social backgrounds in which Woolf and Chang lived, and explains the contribution to their feminist themes. Then, it divides the feminist themes into three aspects. First is the deconstruction of patriarchy-centered system which opposes men’s overwhelming authority and dissolves the opposite relation between men and women. Second is the awakening of women’s self-consciousness, that is, inspiring women to fight for their rights and freedom. Third is the reflection on the relation between the sexes, which means the criticism on the current relation between men and women, and the ways to solve the problems. In the end, it summarizes the great significance of the analysis of Woolf’s and Chang’s feminist themes.
