Abstract

Earnest Hemingway is a famous American writer in the 20th century. The themes in his novel are mainly about death and courage. I think it originates from his heroism complex. Because of this complex, he pays special attention to noticing and describing death. This paper analyses Hemingway’s main characters in The Old Man and the Sea, especially the old man named Santiago, from their actions, words, and thought acts. Particularly during fishing the marlin, he sees the fish from living to dead, from struggling to tired out to dead. I’d like to find out the origin and intension of Heroism as well as analyzing the meaning of Hemingway’s Heroism from this. This paper will first introduce Hemingway’s life and his life experiences which reacted to his writing style. Then this work will analyze the Heroism exists in the novel, For instance, the dialogues between the old man and the child, and his change of attitude towards the big marlin after his sailing. I’d try to expound Hemingway’s Heroism and the Heroism in the novel detailed. By analyzing the novel, I think Hemingway’s Heroism is a cardiotonic which encourages people to face the difficulties positively in that generation of lost and anxiety. Profound meaning hides under plain simple plot, I think it’s also the reason why his novels are deeply welcomed and attractive.

摘要

海明威是美国二十世纪著名的作家，其小说主题主要是死亡和勇气，本人认为这是源于他的英雄主义情结，也正是由于这种英雄主义情结，使得他特别的关注和描写死亡。本文通过分析《老人与海》的主人公，桑提亚哥老人和他的语言、行为和思想活动，特别是他在追捕大马林鱼的过程中目睹了大马林鱼从生到死，从挣扎到力竭而亡的过程，揭示英雄主义的根源和内涵，并分析海明威的英雄主义情结的意义。本文先介绍海明威的生平和生活经历以及生活经历对写作风格的反作用，接着分析小说中存在的英雄主义，例如老人和孩子的对话、老人的思想活动、出海后对大马林鱼看法的转变等。力求在写作过程中，能够比较详细的阐述海明威的“英雄主义”及其在《老人与海》中的体现。通过对《老人与海》的分析，作者认为海明威的英雄主义是在普遍迷茫、焦虑的时代，鼓励人们正视死亡，积极生活的一剂强心剂。平常的故事情节下蕴含着深刻的意义，这也正是海明威小说深受欢迎的原因和其艺术魅力所在。
