Abstract:

Love is an everlasting pursuit, but people, in different times and of different social backgrounds, have different concepts about love. In real life, no matter how perfect an ideal love may be, it cannot stand the strike of cruel reality. Such love cannot exist without material basis. The main content of the thesis is to introduce and analyze the love value of the characters created by F. Scott Fitzgerald in his novel The Great Gatsby and the love value of the young in today’s China. The common point of their view on love is that they just base their love on pursuing the material wealth. Daisy in The Great Gatsby and Ma Nuo in today’s China are the representative of the blind love based on money. They are regarded as “the material girls” who are vane and are obsessed with money and pursuit of material comforts, but that is only something external. The internal reason is that they are under the pressure of the society and their parents and therefore they have no other choice. They are the products of the society which they live in, and in them can be found some ugly phenomena of the real social life. This dissertation consists of five parts. The first part is an introduction to the author and the plot of the novel The Great Gatsby. The second part focuses on the background of the novel and the social condition of modern China. The third part is a discussion of true love and views on true love. It calls attention to the fact that Americans in 1920s and people in contemporary China share some similar view of love. The fourth part is an analysis the love view of substantial girls, such as Daisy and Ma Nuo. The last part deals with the similarity and difference between Daisy and Ma Nuo. And finally in the conclusive part, the author tries to present a view on how to correctly look at love.

摘  要：

爱情是人们亘古不变的追求，但在不同的时代，不同的社会背景下，它所表达的具体爱情观也是不同的。在现实生活中，理想的爱情再完美，也禁不住残酷现实的打击，离不开物质的基础。本论文的主要内容是介绍和分析在《了不起的盖茨比》中作者菲茨杰拉德所描述人物的爱情观和当代中国年轻人的爱情观。两者爱情观都是以追求物质财富为基础。《了不起的盖茨比》中黛西和现代中国女孩马诺是以金钱为爱情观的代表。她们可以被认为是爱慕虚荣，迷恋金钱，物质享受的“物质女孩”。但这只是外在表现。在社会和父母的双重压力下，她们别无选择。她们是某一时代的产物，揭示了当时社会现状的一些丑陋现象。本论文由五部分组成。第一部分包括作者的介绍和小说《了不起的盖茨比》的简要概述。在第二部分，主要描写了小说的时代背景和当代中国的现状。第三部分主要讨论真爱及对它的理解。值得注意的是，不同时代，20世纪20年代的美国人和当代中国人拥有相似的爱情观。第四部分主要研究了物质女孩的爱情观，如黛西和马诺。最后介绍了黛西和马诺的相同和不同之处。文本在最后做总结并揭示如何保持正确的爱情观。
