Abstract
The Great Gatsby is one of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s representative works. Daisy, the heroine, is the narrator Nick’s cousin, Tom Buchanan’s wife and Gatsby’s lover. She is always in white, enchanting and moving like a holy angel landing to the world. However, she is also frivolous, materialistic and callous, just like an evil. She is the symbol of American Dream and the typical delegate of Jazz Age and Gold-plated Girl. This dissertation aims to explore the dual image of Daisy—beautiful in appearance but damned in heart, and the social influence upon her moral degradation. She is a victim of the money-orientated and men-privileged society. Having made a detailed study on the causes of her immoral and negative images, the dissertation concludes that although immorality is dominant in her character, it is closely related to the money-orientated and men-dominated society. Thus, Daisy deserves sympathy and understanding. Female characters are victims of the society as well as of the men in the Jazz Age.
Key words: Daisy, female, negative images, immoral, victim, money-oriented society
1. Introduction
1.1 Daisy’s background
Throughout The Great Gatsby, Daisy is almost described in fairytale language. She was born in a wealthy family in Louisville, the United States of southern Kentucky. The well-off family circumstance makes Daisy naïve and carefree. She looks forward to a beautiful love and is fond of the limelight. She possesses almost everything that other girls admire. The house she lives in amazed Gatsby and he regards it as the most beautiful house he has ever seen. She is by far the most popular of all the young girls in Louisville. She has a woman’s most important weapon: beauty. In general, physical appeal is easy to create an image of beauty, which is the reason why for Gatsby, originally belonging to a poorer background and a lower social class, Daisy is the symbol containing a promise of perfect love and ultimate happiness.
