Abstract: Due to their literary and aesthetic value, Shakespeare’s Sonnets have always been the focus of scholars from home and abroad. Shakespeare is good at using metaphors. Translation of metaphors in the sonnets is difficult for us. To help the readers better appreciate the metaphors in Shakespeare’s Sonnets, first this paper will make a simple research on the metaphors in Shakespeare’s Sonnets, which includes three parts, namely, the wide use of metaphors, the characteristics of these metaphors and some possible difficulties of translating them. Then on the basis of the metaphor translation procedures proposed by Newmark and Liu Chongde, and through analysis of some translation examples of the metaphors in Shakespeare’s Sonnets, this paper attempts to summarize four translation approaches, namely recurrence of the image, transferring metaphors to similes, replacement of the image by a different one and deletion of the image. This study aims to make a small contribution to the research area of Shakespeare translation and to provide applicable strategies to translate metaphors in other English poetry.
Key words: Shakespeare’s Sonnets, metaphor, strategy, metaphor translation

Recently, studies on metaphors have been on a rise while studies on the translation of them are relatively few. Due to its literary and aesthetic value, Shakespeare’s Sonnets is always the focus of scholars from home and abroad. Shakespeare, as the leading authority of English literature and even the world literature, uses a great number of metaphors in his Sonnets. So the translation of metaphors in Shakespeare’s Sonnets is very important for Chinese. However, the translation of metaphors in Shakespeare’s Sonnets is by no means an easy job. So this study helps the readers better appreciate the metaphors in Shakespeare’s Sonnets even the Sonnets. More importantly, it can also help English poetry translators properly handle the difficult task of metaphor translation in their practice. Meanwhile, the collection and analysis of many examples of metaphor translation in this paper might be a small contribution to the research area of Shakespeare translation
