1. Introduction
Thomas Hardy is one of the novelists of influence in the nineteenth century of England. He produces 15 novels, 4 short stories, 8 poems and 2 poetic dramas, is also considered as one of the most classics authors of western literature history. To compare with most Victorian writers, Hardy is not only good at characterization, but also good at the description of female minds. Those female characters under Hardy’s writing all have female consciousness. But the female consciousness is all destroyed finally.
Far from the Madding Crowd tells us a love story in the countryside of England. Gabriel Oak was a hard working farm owner who started and stocked a farm, and made a living by his intelligence and lived a frugal life. He fell in love with Bathsheba Everdene, a proud beautiful young woman who inherited a farm from her uncle. However, when he made a proposal to her, she refused and even laughed at him. What’s worse, Oak had lost all of his fortune and became an ordinary man. On his way to find a job, he saved a dangerous fire on a farm which just belonged to Bathsheba. To thank for him, Bathsheba gave him a job. The job connected them again. After experiencing two men, William Boldwood and Frank Troy, Bathsheba realized the bitterness of her love and marriage, she found Gabriel Oak was always on her side and could do anything for her. Finally, they got married.
