A Contrastive Study of Chinese and English Animal Idioms Based on Conceptual Metaphor Theory

Abstract
It is known that language is a major medium of communication for human beings. In the process of intercultural communication, an idiom is a great obstacle. An idiom is the product of language which has been used by human beings for a long time and any language with a long history contains a large number of idioms. Hidden behind the idioms of every nation are different natural environments, manners and customs, historical allusions and fables as well as modes of thinking. From the perspective of the conceptual metaphor, an idiom affects not only our language but also our thought and behavior. The conceptual metaphor theory provides a new perspective for us to unscramble idioms. Only if we completely comprehend the cultural characteristics of every nation can we have a better understanding of idioms. In recent years, many scholars have conducted some relevant researches about animal idioms. This paper selects some Chinese and English animal idioms as objects of study to discuss how to immerse ourselves in different cultures to learn the foreign idioms well viewed from conceptual metaphor.
