Subtitle Translation of Kung Fu Panda from the Perspective of Functionalist Approach

摘要

当今社会的大众文化传播途径包括报纸杂志，电视互联网以及新媒体网络等等。电影作为一种不可替代的传播媒介，在信息的传递和文化的传播方面发挥着重要的作用。伴随着电影产业的快速壮大，电影字幕的翻译也随之得到大众和相关学者的关注。日益密切和频繁的中外文化交流活动使得国内涌现越来越多的国外影视作品，而欧美文化产业的繁荣使得英文电影受到中国观众的关注与喜爱。虽然字幕翻译这一领域近些年发展迅速，但是由于资料与条件的限制，对于字幕翻译的研究还有很大的发展空间。所以，怎样运用翻译理论指导英文影片字幕翻译，使得中国观众更好地欣赏英文影片的文化内涵，这一问题意义重大。

现今对于字幕翻译的研究还存在许多问题，本文尝试研究功能对等理论在电影字幕翻译中的运用。本文通过对电影《功夫熊猫》字幕翻译的具体例子分析，研究功能对等理论在字幕翻译中的体现与运用。研究目的在于通过具体案例的分析为电影字幕翻译提供理论参考和指导，并希望引起更多学者对这一较新的翻译领域的关注，以促进电影字幕翻译的发展。

Abstract

Film, an essential part of mass communication nowadays, shoulders the mission of passing on culture and conveying information. Subtitle translation has therefore functions as a practice field for translation. Foreign culture products, especially English films, are affecting China along with the progressively frequent cultural exchanges around the world. In view of the conventional features of translation studies, subtitle translation study, nevertheless, seems to be less systematic and mature. Consequently, the way to translate English movies under suitable theories' instruction and help the Chinese audiences to understand the foreign film is more significant.

Given the current subtitle translation’s problems, this thesis disserts Functional Equivalence Theory’s application. This article endeavors to study subtitle translation within Functional Equivalence Theory’s framework with a case of Kung Fu Panda. It studies Functional Equivalence Theory’s application from the aspects of linguistics, stylistics and culture in the movie with specific instances. By exploring Functional Equivalence Theory’s application in the subtitle translation, the aim of the dissertation is to provide subtitle translation with theoretical guidance and appeal for more attention in this rather new field's further study.
