顺应论视角下散文英译探究-以张培基的《英译中国现代散文选》为例_英语论文

Study of C-E Prose Translation From the Perspective of Adaptation Theory---A Case Study of Selected Modern Chinese Writing by Zhang Peiji

摘要

自古以来，不管是在中国还是西方国家，散文在文学史上都发挥着不可或缺的作用。然而，与诗歌和小说相比，相关译者及学者对散文英译的研究还相当滞后，取得的成就也寥寥可数。张培基，作为中国著名的翻译学家，对中国现代散文的英译做出了突出的贡献。在他的译著中，最有名的是他的《英译中国现代散文选》，其中所有的散文都是出自五四名家之手，由张培基教授精选和翻译。从出版以来一直深受欢迎，张培基教授对这些散文英译作品为中国现代散文翻译提供了很好的借鉴。

杰夫维索尔伦是比利时著名的语言学家，1999年他出版了《语用学新解》。在此书中他提出了顺应论，指出语言的使用过程是语言选择的过程，语言有变异性、商讨性和顺应性三个特点。这三个特性在使用语言的过程中，可以确保语言使用者做出适合的选择。

在顺应论的指导下，本文对张培基教授的《英译中国现代散文选（一）》进行分析、概括和总结。不仅从理论上解读了散文的翻译技巧，并且让读者和译者更加了解了散文及其译作的各个层面，以期对今后的翻译实践也具有一定的参考价值。

Abstract

Since the ancient times, prose has played an indispensable role in the history of literature wherever in China or in the west, however, compared with poems and novels, the study on the C-E prose translation is much backward, and notable achievements are numbered. Prof. Zhang Peiji is a famous modern translator in China, making great contribution to C-E translation of modern Chinese prose for more than fifty years. Among his translated works, the series of Selected Modern Chinese Prose Writings are the most famous, in which the essays written by famous writers during May Fourth Period were selected and translated by Prof. Zhang. Since the publication of the first volume, it has continuously received appreciative criticism. What’s more, it deserves further studies in the long term.

Adaptation Theory, proposed Jef. Verschueren, argues that language use is a process of choice-making. Variability, negotiability and adaptability are the three properties of language which ensures the language users to make continuous choices to reach communicative purpose. 

From the perspective of Adaptation Theory, this thesis analyzes and summarizes Prof. Zhang’s Selected Modern Chinese Prose Writings (I), not only elaborating the skills of prose translation theoretically but also helping readers and translators to have a better understanding of the various aspects of prose and its translation. It is hopeful that this thesis can be of some value in further translation practice.
