《红高粱》中国元素的英译

English Translation of Chinese Elements in Red Sorghum: A Novel of China

摘要

莫言是中国当代著名作家，茅盾文学奖获得者，更是中国首位诺贝尔文学奖获得者。他的作品充满着“怀乡”以及“怨乡”的复杂情感，被归类为“寻根文学”作家。

获得诺贝尔文学奖以后，无论是莫言本人还是国内外专家学者，都认为翻译功不可没。中国不乏好作家，中国文学中也不乏好作品，却很难像日本、印度等亚洲文学一样被世界所接受。其中一个重要原因就是翻译没有起到良好的桥梁作用，更准确的说，是中国特殊的政治、经济、文化、宗教等社会背景下产生的文学作品，经过翻译，很难在另一种背景下“重生”。

莫言的成功让我们看到了希望，莫言小说的翻译研究也成为了热点。《红高粱》是莫言的杰出代表作，是莫言被翻译最多的作品。《红高粱》中存在大量中国特有的元素，这些内容的翻译是难点但也是精髓。这些中国元素展现了中国传统的价值观，勾画出二十世纪中国的历史文化变迁，也自然地呈现了当时中国农村的生活状况。

本文将以葛浩文先生的译本为例，探讨《红高粱》中，中国特有元素的翻译。本文认为，译文除了忠实于原文并考虑读者的接受外，更重要的是传达这些文化内涵。

Abstract
Mo Yan, winner of Mao Dun Prize for literature and the only Chinese winner of Nobel Literature Prize, is one of the greatest writers in China. His works are full of intricate emotions about the hometown in memory and imagination, which makes him the representative of root-seeking literature.
Translation works play an important role in Mo Yan’s success of Nobel Prize, according to Mo Yan himself and specialists from all over the world. As great Chinese literature works are too complicated to translate into other languages, Chinese literature works can hardly be rebirth in different environments and be accepted by non-Chinese readers like Japanese and Indian literature works.
However, Mo Yan and translators of his works have shown us a successful way of rebirth and acceptance. Red Sorghum is the representative work of Mo Yan, which has been translated most. There are a lot of special Chinese elements in Red Sorghum. These elements show the traditional Chinese sense of worth, represent the historical change of china in the twentieth century and describe the living condition in Chinese country in that time. All of these are the hardest and most important content to be translated.
This paper will study the translation of special Chinese elements in Red Sorghum, based on the translation work of Howard Goldblatt. Besides the original work and acceptance, to convey the cultural connotation is more important in translation.
