Abstract
This paper studies the translation methods of humor dialogues in sitcoms from the perspective of Relevance Theory which proposed by Sperber and Wilson (1986) and the Relevance-theoretic account of translation theory posed by Gutt(1991), and the specific cases provide a new angle for humorous dialogue translation. Relevance Theory understands communication as an ostensive-inferential process, involving the informative and communicative intention. According to relevance-theoretic account of translation, translation is not only an interlingual communication but also an inferential communication. Translation of humorous is a process in which the translator seeks the optimal relevance between the cognitive contexts of source language and target language. The author first analyses the definition of humor and the Relevance Theory, then the author gives a brief account of Relevance Theory and Relevance Translation Theory aiming to manifest the explanatory power and instructive significance of Relevance Translation Theory for humor translation in sitcom; at last, the author applies the Relevance Theory to the analysis of specific examples of humor translation in sitcom. According to Theory, there are three translation methods listed in this paper, they are: literal translation, replacement, and annotation. Meanwhile, the author points out that subtitle translator should adopt flexible and appropriate strategies with certain complementary techniques to achieve optimal relevance and to ensure the communicative validity and humorous effect.
