Abstract:
Hypotaxis and parataxis are two types of structures in arranging the sentences that exist in both Chinese and English. The fact that English shows hypotactic prominence and that Chinese paratactic makes differences in translation. English is noted for its individual analytic thought emphasizing forms while Chinese puts high value on the wholeness and harmonious relationship between the integrity and segment, a fixed thinking pattern with emphasis on stream of consciousness and comparative ignorance of logic reasoning. In terms of these differences, people are influenced greatly in translation due to different thinking patterns and various cultural backgrounds. In most cases, language learners may be not appropriate or even native in the way of translation. Based on the previous research on the hypotaxis and parataxis, this paper offers a brief analysis of the hypotactic and paratactic phenomena in the two languages. In the first part, it gives a brief introduction on the definition of the two items and also the previous studies experts have done. In the second part, by means of comparison between English and Chinese languages from many aspects, this paper makes a contrastive analysis on the differences of the hypotaxis and parataxis. In the third part, it mainly presents the translation methods on the transformation between hypotaxis and parataxis. Thus, readers will have a better understanding of the distinguishable factors in the hypotaxis and parataxis so as to do better in English-to-Chinese translation and vice versa.

摘  要：
形合与意合是中、英文中衔接句意的两种形式。由于英文重形合、中文重意合这一现象，由此产生了翻译中的差异。英文强调形式的独特解析思维，相比而言，中文则更注重整体与部分的和谐统一关系。这是一个强调意识流和逻辑思维的传统思维模式。正因为如此，人们在翻译的时候会受到思维模式和文化背景的影响。在大多数情况下，语言学习者很难运用适当翻译手法来很好地或者地道地表达原意。本文在借鉴前人分析成果的基础上，简要的分析了两国语言中形合与意合的现象。在第一部分，文章简要阐述了形合、意合的定义以及前人所做的研究。第二部分，通过比较中英两种语言，文章从多方面对比分析了形合于意合的差别。第三部分，文章就形合与意合之间的相互转换提供了翻译方法。这样，人们会对形合与意合的不同之处有更深的了解，并在中英互译的过程中更好地运用与掌握。

1 Introduction
Hypotaxis and parataxis are two types of construction methods in arranging the sentences that exist in both English and Chinese. “One of the most important contrasts between English and Chinese lies in hypotaxis and parataxis. The fact that English shows hypotactic prominence and Chinese paratactic makes great differences in the translation”. Nowadays, the translators may make mistakes in the process of English-Chinese translation and vice versa.
