摘 要

张培基先生是我国著名的翻译家、教育家，在文学翻译特别是中国现代散文翻译方面具有高深造诣。他所著的《英译中国现代散文选》为中国学者深入研究翻译理论与技巧提供了丰富多彩的典型实例，同时也为外国人研究1919 年“五四”运动以来中国人鲜活的思想提供了一条捷径。随着中国综合国力和国际地位的提升，世界各国人民越来越关注中国文化。然而，带有西方主流强势价值观的人则会误读中国，认为中国的文化落后、陈腐。本文主要通过分析张培基先生所著的《英译中国现代散文选》，总结学习他的散文翻译技巧和特点,同时还初步探讨其翻译中的遗憾，简要分析造成这些遗憾的原因，以期提高散文翻译的质量，增进世界对中国的了解。

Abstract

Mr. Zhang Peiji is a famous translator and educator in our country who has profound attainments in literary translation, especially in modern Chinese prose translation. His book, Selected Modern Chinese Essays, not only provides Chinese scholars with a variety of typical examples in the deep study of translating theories and techniques but also a cut way for foreign scholars to understand the Chinese ideological development since the May 4th Movement of 1919. With the rapid upgrade of comprehensive national strength and international status, China’s culture is gaining more and more attention throughout the world. However, people with strong western mainstream values tend to misread China, regarding China’s cultural as backward and stale. This thesis is to, through analyzing Selected Modern Chinese Essays by Mr. Zhang Peiji, sum up and learn his prose translating skills and features, discuss his translation regret and analyze reasons for the regret, and finally improve the quality of prose translation, promoting a better understanding of China in foreign countries.

Chapter 1 Introduction
Zhang Peiji was born in Fuzhou, Fujian Province, in 1921. He graduated from the Department of English Literature of St. John’s University, Shanghai, in 1945. In the same year, he worked as reporter of The Shanghai Herald (English language newspaper), contributing editor of The China Critic (English language journal) and concurrently deputy chief editor of the English edition of China Year Book (1944-1945). From 1946 to 1948, he worked for two years and a half as translator and interpreter at the International Prosecution Section (IPS) under the International Military Tribunal for the Far East in Tokyo. In 1949, after doing postgraduate studies in English literature at Indiana University, USA he returned to China, and worked successively as editor and translator of the Foreign Languages Press, Beijing, English professor of the PLA Foreign Languages Institute, English professor of the University of International Business and Economics (UIBE), Beijing, and concurrently editor-in-chief of UIBE Publishing House. He was member of the first and the third council of the Translators Association of China, and is currently to the English magazine of The World of English.
