Abstract:

Reduplicated words are often used in Chinese prose to achieve special rhetorical effects in rhythm, image and expression. There are a lot of reduplicated words in Moonlight over the Lotus Pond and these reduplicated words play important role in expressing the author’s emotion. This paper is divided into four parts. The first part is a brief introduction to reduplicated words. The second part includes a general contrast of reduplicated words between Chinese and English languages and the functions of reduplicated words. In particular, the reduplicated words in Moonlight over the Lotus Pond are assorted into different types and the functions of these reduplicated words are classified. In the third part, the ways to translate the reduplicated words in Moonlight over the Lotus Pond are discussed. In addition, the relationship between methods and functions are discussed. Some of the methods can keep the original beauty, while some of them can not. The author will draw a conclusion in the last part in which major findings of this thesis are summarized.

摘  要：

叠词在中文散文中非常常见，它是一种特殊的修辞手法。叠词作为语言的一种特殊词汇现象，体现了语言的音韵美、形象美、表达美。《荷塘月色》是朱自清先生的一篇传世之作, 是现代文学中散文的精品,是美文中的美文。《荷塘月色》中包含大量的叠词，叠词在表达作者感情方面也起了很大的作用。
  论文主体共分为四大部分。第一部分是对叠词做一些简单地介绍。第二部分对英汉两种语言中的叠词做了比较，阐述了叠词的类型以及功能。特别对于《荷塘月色》里叠词的分类以及功能作用作了介绍。第三部分是本论文的重点。以《荷塘月色》为例，总结出可行的翻译策略去翻译《荷塘月色》中的叠词，并对叠词的翻译方法和功能的关系进行总结分类。有些叠词翻译后保留了叠词以前的功能效果，有些则没有。第三部分是总结部分。我加深了对叠词翻译的认识，也对本文的内容进行总结。

1 Introduction
    Reduplication is a combination of sound and meaning. The more harmonious the two factors fit with each other, the more effective the meaning is expressed. In reduplicated words, the same word or part of the word are repeated in order to increase the vitality of the language. As a kind of formation of words and figures of speech, the reduplicated words exist in both Chinese and English languages. However, there is difference between Chinese and English reduplicated words.
   This paper intends to make a research on the translation of reduplicated words in Moonlight over the Lotus Pond (translated by Zhu Chunsheng in “Selected Modern Chinese Prose Writings” and “Essays 108”). The body of this paper is made up of two parts. The first part is the brief introduction to the reduplicated words and the difference between Chinese and English reduplicated words. The second part is about the ways to translate the Chinese reduplicated words and the different functions after translating.
