Abstract:

Due to different factors imposed in translation process such as languages, cultures, values, etc, loss of translation is inevitable in translation process. Although compensation is consequently an effective means to make up for the loss, it doesn’t get enough attention and many areas of it remain to be carefully probed into. The Chinese version of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland translated by Yuen Ren Chao is greatly and widely praised by numerous scholars both at home and abroad. This article analyzes compensation strategies adopted by Yuen Ren Chao at lexical, discourse and aesthetic levels. Four compensation strategies of amplification, generalization, omission and specification are used in lexical level. Compensation at the discourse level is realized by adding logical conjunctions and person deixis. Compensation at aesthetic level is only discussed from rhyme.

翻译过程中存在着语言、文化、价值观方面的差异，导致了损失在翻译过程中的不可避免性。尽管翻译补偿能有效地弥补这种损失，但是它却并没有得到足够的重视，还有很多领域有待探讨。由赵元任所译的《爱丽丝梦游仙境》中译本得到了得到了国内外诸多学者的广泛关注和肯定。本文分析了赵元任在翻译过程中在词汇，语篇和审美三个层面所采取的翻译补偿策略。词汇层面主要采取了增益，概括化，省略和具体化的方法。语篇层面上主要通过添加语篇连接词和人称代词的方法来实现翻译补偿。审美层面上，本文主要从押韵方面来讨论。

Introduction
    Translation is a long-standing tradition dating back to the ancient world. In the 1990s, translation studies finally came into its own and interest in the field has never been stronger and the study of translation is taking place alongside an increase in its practice all over the world. Due to the differences between languages, cultures and environment, compensation is necessary in the process of translation. It is not until the 1980s that translation is regarded seriously. Scholars at home and abroad like Nida, Peter Newmark, Xia Tingde, Ke Ping and others elaborate on translation compensation.
