Abstract and Key Words

Abstract： The thesis aims to find out the relationship between context and middle school English vocabulary teaching in order to suggest an orientation to the vocabulary teaching in middle school English teaching by making use of context. The purpose of the research is to call upon students as well as teachers to be context-sensitive to figure out the different connotations of the words in different contexts.

摘要：这篇文章旨在找出语境与中学英语词汇教学之间的联系， 主张将语境运用到中学英语词汇教学中去，以此来唤起老师和学生的语境意识，使学生能在不同的语境下正确的试用词汇。

1.Introduction
Vocabulary teaching is an integral part of foreign language. Its efficiency is directly related to the development of the learners’ communicative competence. But with the traditional teaching methods, many students especially middle school students could not understand and use English words appropriately after learning English for many years. The reason is that the students only remember the connotative word meanings, which are usually mentioned on the textbooks or in the dictionaries. However, the same English word may mean differently in different contexts, for the same word may bear different associative meanings.
Context, which was first proposed by Bronislaw Malinowski, is a very important concept in modern linguistics, including linguistic context, situational context and cultural context. All of them play a vital role on the determination of word meaning. To repair the deficiencies of vocabulary teaching methodologies and to improve students’ understanding and using of English words, the application of context theories to the teaching of words in middle school may be useful. To introduce context theories into middle school English teaching mean to put words in a large language environment. That is, to take the various factors which will influence the word meaning into full consideration, in doing so, students will catch a more exact meaning of the words in a certain context. In this way, the use of words would be shown to the students, which will make the students learn how to use the words correctly. Also, it is much easier for the students to remember the words.
