Abstract: Language is the most important tool for people to interact with each other. The listener and speaker can only communicate freely and understand the intension of one’s words when in an appropriate context. Context has an effect on the way people formulating their linguistic messages and it is clear that utterances should be suitable to a specific context.  This paper aims to analyze some dialogues in Shaw’s drama Pygmalion from a contextual perspective. The first part is an introduction, which includes both the status of context and scenario of the drama. The second part introduces the development of the theory of context and the importance of context, and the categories of context will also be discussed. The third part analyzes drama dialogues from the perspective of situational context and cultural context. The final part is a conclusion. The thesis shows the role of context in utterance interpretation and that a speaker’s speech of act is affected by a specific context, which highlights the importance of context in communication.

摘  要：语言是人与人之间进行交流的最重要的工具。但只有在一个合适的语境下，听话人和说话人才能自如地交流并且理解对方说话的意图。人们表达自身语言信息的方式受到语境的影响，很显然话语要适合一个特定的语境。本文旨在从语境的角度来分析萧伯纳的戏剧《卖花女》中的一些对话。第一部分是绪论，包括语境的地位和戏剧的情节。第二部分详述语境理论的发展及语境的重要性，并且讨论了语境的类别。第三部分着重从情景语境和文化语境角度分析戏剧的对话。最后一部分是本文的结论。本文显示了语境在话语诠释里的作用，说明了说话者的言语行为受到特定语境的影响，强调了语境在人们交流中的重要性。
